Tips on learning how to play the F chord on guitar?
I’m learning to play guitar and want to learn to play F, for obvious reasons, but it’s very hard… I heard that it’s actually easier to barre all six strings, but I’m using the mini-bar, because if that’s harder than I want to learn that so all barring will be easier. I have trouble pressing both strings, though. Help?
Practice Practice Practice!
Playing barre chords is all about the strength in your hands, which is why learning to play them is so difficult at first. You need to build up that strength.
I find it easier to barre all six strings and i would recommend practicing it with all six strings at first to build up the strength in your hand. (A good exercise is to place your fingers in the shape of the chord, lightly resting on the strings. Then firmly press down. Hold it and release, keeping your fingers in place. Rest your hand for a second, then press down on again. You can even do this in front of the TV!)
When practicing the chord, take it slow, making sure that each string is pressed down firmly.
When you have the shape pressed down, pluck each string individually making sure that you hear a clear sound.
Practice until your hand is tired, but don’t push yourself. You don’t want a hand cramp. Those hurt!
Practice every day, and you’ll be playing that F in no time!
I would also suggest finding a song that you really want to learn to play, that has chords you can play easily as well as an F chord here and there.The song will help to motivate you to practice the F chord. Play the song normally until you reach the F, and once you get to the F, strum it once and wait out the rest of the beats. This will allow you time to get your fingers in place. Pretty soon you’ll find that you don’t need the extra time to place your fingers, and you can strum the F normally. You will have learned a new song, and chord!
Once you can play the F barre chord, try out a few other barre chords as well. Many will seem easy once you have the F down! Good Luck!
